Check out some of my favorite maps.

Where will future rockslides happen? Drag the slider to reveal potential hazards.

We know rockslides occur in steep rocky cliffs, but what areas are the most vulnerable? Here, a steep northwest facing cliff in Skagway, Alaska is highly susceptible (red) to rockslide activity, because it aligns with pre-existing fractures in the bedrock.

Historic landslides – does history repeat itself?

In 1972, a pair of geologists mapped evidence of past landslides in Skagway, Alaska. By georeferencing their map, we can compare modern day landslide activity with those that happened in the past.

What’s below the tree canopy?

Lidar can penetrate tree cover and image the underlying topography in detail. Here, topography is colored by its aspect– or the compass direction that it faces (North= blue, East= green, South= yellow, West= red).

Additionally, flat terrain is shaded darker, while steep terrain is shaded lighter. Combined, these techniques show a network of ridges and valleys at the top of the slope and outcropping cliff faces on the steep slope face.
